Quakeworld is the special Quake version optimized for Internet play. The result is a better performance, making far away opponents felt like local network players.

Quakeworld is only available for complete (full registered) version Quake owners. So if you only have the shareware, Quakeworld won't run on your computer. Please see the information for shareware Quake on the other page.

Although it was originally developed by id Software, Quakeworld is an 'unsupported' product, meaning that it was not officially maintained by id. And really, the current Quakeworld version is the result of the contribution of many Quake players who was appointed by id to further develop the product. Cool eh?

There are some differences between Quakeworld and the original Quake, such as:

  • Cannot be used stand-alone (for single-player game). You have to be connected to the special Quakeworld server to play multi-player game
  • Have the facility to perform automatic download from the server if certain data files are not available at the client. If you already know what files are needed however, it is recommended that you download it first via ftp or http :)
  • Every player in Quakeworld could have their own 'skin' or player shirt which can be made/chosen by themselves

You can also go to the help page to see how to run Quakeworld, the mods page to check the various Quakeworld mods available at Indonet, look up the currently running Quakeworld server or see the Quakeworld scheduled game on the schedule.
